As you know, and hopefully read "House Hunters Internationish", we were searching for other places to make sure we are getting the most bang for our buck... well this is what happened.
The day before our house hunting excursion, we went and saw a BEAUTIFUL place that was a little out of the way and at the top of our budget. It would be a good idea to look at other places before making an ultimate decision. We knew it wasn't going to be as nice as the first place, but why not take a look in the city, closer to our jobs? We first got picked up by an agent, Stefan. He was nice and all, but I got my hopes up for a sassy gay man with perfectly gelled hair, a pair of classy pink slacks, and a navy blazer that complements the tie and stripped button up shirt. Kinda like this....
Stefan dressed as casually as we were dressed, but was good at his job; he was very good at talking and keeping us entertained as he drove us around between places.
Place #1...
$1,000/month
My expectations weren't what you'd call high, but I was expecting do-able. We had a good reason for that too! If I called the online pictures deceiving, I'd be making a pretty radical understatement. How about you take a look...ONLINE :
MY FACE AFTER SEEING IT:
OhhhhKayyyy... I might have exaggerated that a bit, but let me describe it. That couch you see, yeah, I'm not sure if it was a household of angry bulls or rabid ferrets, but it was ripped up to the point where Stefan told us to just get rid of it or put it on the front porch. Even better, the new stove you see in the picture was beaten up and was also replaced with another new one. Great! Right? Well besides the fact that the old was still hanging out on the front porch. To top it all off, I'm not sure if this house was built on an ancient island burial ground filled with angry spirits that felt the need to redecorate, but nearly everything had migrated to the center of the room. So, you see my friend, the hunt was off to a bad start.
(shh... never trust the internet)
Place #2...
$1,000/month
Whats better than living in an apartment and sharing every noise you do with your neighbors? How about living in an apartment that ALSO is a hotel and sharing the noise with them and a restaurant and a pool that is about a minute walk from you! I know, I know, I'm moving to St.Thomas and it's different than Michigan and it's expectations, but that first place we saw was BURING in my mind as we pulled up.
As we walked up to the opened door we saw what people would expect to be a hotel room but was a studio apartment. There's a difference between a studio and hotel, slight difference though. This was much more of a hotel feel. I've stayed in about 10 hotels in the past 3 months and I wanted to walk into a place and feel that tingly feeling of home. (If you don't know that feeling, listen to the song "Bubbly" by Colbie Caillat.)
Best picture online they had...
Merr... Not feeling it. AND LETS MOVE ON...
Place #3...
$1,100/month
I've had this place in mind, I liked the color of it, it had EVERYTHING included. (Water, wifi, electric, cable, ya know, the whole package.) The size wasn't that great, but it was cute and homey, well I thought.
They called this area a "fixer upper area". Hmmm... what's that you ask? In the Virgin Islands, it means homeless men live inside the condemned condos a minute away from you, barbed wires around the gate that keeps others out (or us in?), and the bar that is on your walk to work is... well here let me quote our realtor. Points to Byron "you won't come out alive," points to me "you'll come out a prostitute and addicted to crack." He truly didn't mean that in a "bashing locals" way, just he compared it to the biker gang bars, but island version. ANYWAY, in the "near future" (what I think could be PAST the time we are gone) will be all fixed up with new condos and a very desirable area. For now... not so much.
I didn't take a picture of the surrounding area, but this is what my mind saw...
Alright, alright, it was a bit more like this...
(Even though this is taken from another side of town.... let's move on)
THE COZY INSIDE:
Cute right? Totally. But it's pricy for how small it is and I want to go outside at night! There is no view either... =[
I'm going to quit my boohooing about my first world problems and suck it up. It's a great place and all, but it was time to make a real decision.
Decision Making Process...
I just made that sound like there was one. As we were walking back to Stefan's car, we were already talking about how we were going to send out the email to our other realtor, who Stefan works for, about getting that other place. We had no if, ands, or buts about it at this point. I want to live here in comfort! I should have known from the beginning that it would have come full circle. The moment I walked in, the feeling started in my toes and made me crinkle my nose.
Don't you worry your pretty little heads off about pictures of this awesome place I keep mentioning! We are soon moving in and I'm quite positive there will be more than enough. Gosh I'm feeling so bubbly right now! (That's your cue Colbie! And I will indeed count you in.)
Feel free to be jealous....
...Because we are badass
